…begins with a single step.
Thus begins my attempt to drag the Biking Barristers kicking and screaming into the the twenty-first century; guys, there’s a little something called teh Intarwebs out there, and it is generally believed that using this newfangled invention may be of some assistance to folk who are trying to get the word out about the good works they are doing.
Good works like the Miles for Smiles ride and auction – for something like fifteen years now, members of Hamilton’s legal community, led initially by four “Biking Barristers”, have gathered in the early fall to raise money for homeless and troubled youth in our city’s core in two ways: riding bicycles ’til their touchies hurt, and congregating at an auction. Both events have but one purpose: to raise funds for at-risk youth in our City.
It is my hope that this website will:
- help the members of Hamilton’s legal community who volunteer their time and service to get the message out to a broader audience;
- provide information and (hopefully) some entertainment for those already in the know; and
- preserve a little bit of the history of Miles for Smiles in Hamilton.
I’d like for this site to become the number one source of news for committee members, riders, auction-goers, interested bystanders, curious onlookers and members of the public and media at large. To that end, I would invite everyone to make milesforsmilesride.ca one of your Internet Explorer “Favourites”; if you’re using Mozilla Firefox, add us to your bookmarks. Come back from time to time to check on the latest news about this year’s Miles for Smiles ride and auction.
This year, the Miles for Smiles Auction will be on September 18th, 2008 at Tailgate Charlie’s, 69 John St. S in Hamilton. The actual Miles for Smiles ride will be on September 20th, 2008. Set these dates aside in your calendar now; more information about how to become a rider, the items up for auction this year, how to become a Miles for Smiles Sponsor and much, much more will all be coming soon – but first I have to get some sleep.
I would invite members of the various Miles for Smiles committees (you can’t have an event run by lawyers without at least a half a dozen committees being struck, policy papers being written, debates being held, and many pages of documents being written) to let me know when there is news to be disseminated: send me an email at webmaster(at)milesforsmilesride.ca (replace the “at” with an “@” sign, or simply click on the link to launch your email software with the email address automatically completed for you).
That’s all for today; ’til next time, spread the word, o magical electrons!
